About the client
Born in 1964, Frank Bauer is a painter and DJ who lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. Bauer's paintings are based on photographs (although more recent work includes real life portraits) that encapsulate subtle moments in time.
Our solution
The site was created to act as a portfolio for Frank's entire painting collection and allows the user to easily view the artwork.
The decision was made to create a style that did not compete with the paintings, so the design was kept clean and simple. The images are displayed as though part of a contact sheet, with textual information only being displayed when a user needs it and the dark background gives the paintings real impact.
Frank didn't want reams of information on the site, so the biography and exhibition sections are short, sharp, bullet-point.

- Lightbox viewer - a javascript lightbox allows an elegant solution for viewing larger versions of Frank's paintings.
- Database driven for easy updates.
- Full CMS system to allow any section of the site to be updated by Frank and his team.
- Online image editing - allowing homepage images to be cropped and adjusted without having to ever open Photoshop.
- Java image manipulation to enhance images without having to use an editor.
- Accessible - the whole site is CSS driven.
- Browser-independant homepage - the homepage dynamically displays a specific number of images, depending on the size of your browser.
